2010 FOOD LION SPEED STREET COMES TO A CLOSE

Food Lion Speed Street Concluded With The “Best Show of My Life”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 29, 2010) – Corey Smith, headliner for Food Lion Speed Street’s Miller Lite stage, summed up the 16th annual three-day festival as the “best show of my life.” Smith also added “I am beside myself. This was the biggest crowd I have ever played for and when I walked on stage, I lost it from how many people there were.” Food Lion Speed Street came to a close tonight after providing NASCAR fans and the local community with live entertainment, access to racing’s stars, and vendor displays from sponsors Food Lion, Coca-Cola, Miller Lite, Chevrolet and many more.

Highlights from the event include:

  • On May 27, Food Lion Speed Street enjoyed one of its most attended Thursday nights in the history of the 16-year event.
  • With weather closing only the final hour of Food Lion Speed Street on Friday, May 28, attendance for the three-day festival was near the 400,000 mark.
  • Musical performances by Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Corey Smith, Morris Day and The Time, Luke Bryan and Rodney Atkins.
  • More than 70 stars from the motorsports community appeared at Food Lion Speed Street including Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Elliott Sadler and several others.
  • The organizing committee for Food Lion Speed Street, known as the 600 Festival Association, presented Speedway Children’s Charities with a $75,000 donation, which provides needed funds to care for children in educational, financial, social and medical need in order to help them lead productive lives.
  • NASCAR’s newest icon, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, was integrated into the event’s footprint.
  • The Wheaties FUEL “Feel the Fuel Contest” challenged race fans to a 58-hour, “last-man-standing” contest at Food Lion Speed Street. The contest began at noon on Thursday and concluded tonight at 10 p.m. ET. Shannon McManus of Charlotte was the most dedicated fan that kept her hand on the Wheaties FUEL show car the longest and won a VIP trip for two to the Charlotte Motor Speedway race in October, suite tickets, $500 cash, $500 Food Lion gift card and a meet and greet with a driver. Three contestants remained for the entire time with McManus earning the top prize after a tie-breaking trivia contest. Daniel Richards of Bessemer City placed second, and Patrick Malveau of Charlotte placed third, both receiving race tickets and Food Lion gift cards in the amount of $500 and $250, respectively.
  • Food Lion Speed Street precedes the 51st running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 30.

Each year, Food Lion Speed Street is committed to bringing the local community and NASCAR fans an unprecedented, family-friendly experience. Dates for the 2011 event are set for May 26, 27 and 28. For more information visit, www.600festival.com
